A structured brain-storming session can help you break out of the loop and find new, profitable routes to market.

1. Invite people from different parts of your organisation - everyone has a unique view of your company’s strengths and weaknesses.
2. An outside facilitator can give you a fresh, external perspective and won’t get snarled up in your company culture / dynamics.
3. Plan the session carefully and cover all the key points listed below. Don’t dwell too long on one topic, move on and come back if necessary.
4. Start by examining your beliefs. “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t – you’re probably right”. Are your beliefs limiting or liberating?
5. Write down what you currently do, then ask: “What could we possibly do?” Do not preclude any ideas at this stage. Think big and dare to dream!
6. Create a short, lucid statement that articulates your value to others. Avoid clichés – award bonus points for originality and creativity!
7. Set S.M.A.R.T. objectives (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timescale)
8. List all the challenges that you face. What is currently holding you back from ultimate supremacy? Prioritise your top 3. Which of these are you addressing?
9. Paint a mental picture of your ideal customer. Think in terms of size, vertical market, geographical location and other, softer attributes.
10. Don’t let all this good work go to waste. Draw up a schedule of sales and marketing activities; assign responsibilities, set timescales and fix a date for the next review meeting.
