What is Corporate Social Responsibility?
|
|||
What is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)? In recent years, with ever-increasing concern over the environment, the issue of the relationship between organisations and society has come under close scrutiny. This has led to the adoption of a generic term to describe the concept: Corporate Social Responsibility, or CSR. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a measure of how well an organization considers the interests of society. How much impact does the operation of that organization have on customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, communities and the environment? As well as meeting the various statutory obligations, it has become common practice for companies to pro-actively exceed the legislation – whether it’s in the interests of good PR or a genuine desire to improve the quality of life for employees and their families as well as for the local community and society at large. The nature of corporate social responsibility has therefore become a topical one for business. With so many organizations keen to express their CSR credentials, it’s perhaps no surprise to find there is even a degree course on the subject. London Metropolitan University, a leader in the application of social responsibility issues businesses typically face, says of the course “employment opportunities across the spectrum of management disciplines are extensive for graduates with this degree” adding that “ethical behaviour and a concern for the environment have been shown to have a positive correlation with corporate performance.” Course students benefit from the latest theories and practices of Corporate Social Responsibility. So it’s clear that CSR is a hot issue for business, covering a range of issues, but primarily concerning the way an organization adds social, economical, and above all environmental value. Indeed, the Government sees CSR as the contribution businesses make to our longterm sustainable development goals. www.businessinberkshire.co.uk
